Dr. Benito “Ben” L. Teehankee

Dr. Benito “Ben” L. Teehankee is the Jose E. Cuisia Professor of Business Ethics at the Department of Management and Organisation (where he served as founding Department Chairman in 2011-14) of the Ramon V. del Rosario College of Business, De La Salle University.  He has taught the following courses at some point in his nearly 40 years of teaching: sociology, statistics, research methods, total quality management, business ethics, organisational behaviour, managing change, strategic management, corporate governance, management theory, business intelligence & analytics, humanistic management, service management, action research and faith-based management.

Ben conducts executive development seminars on humanistic management under the university’s School of Lifelong Learning (SOLL).  He has served as a speaker or consultant to various private, government, and educational organizations including BDO Unibank, HSBC, AES, RCBC Group of Companies, Globe Telecom, PLDT, Siemens, Andersen Consulting, Petron, Amkor, Marsman Tours and Travel, Pascual Laboratories, Consuelo Foundation, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, the Bureau of Food and Drugs, the Department of Interior and Local Government, Department of Health, University of Santo Tomas, Miriam College, St. Scholastica’s College, the World Health Organization, among many others.

His consulting and speaking areas have included corporate governance, leadership, ethics, process improvement, total quality management, corporate culture, information technology applications, communication, team-building, strategic thinking, and creativity, among others. He has delivered academic and professional development lectures in Kuala Lumpur, Anaheim, Tokyo, Melbourne, Jakarta, Hanoi, Hong Kong, Tainan and Edinburgh.  He was invited by the Vatican Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace as a moderator during the conference on The Logic of Gift and the Meaning of Business held in Rome in February 2011.  The conference was attended by business educators from around the world focused on incorporating Catholic Social Teachings into business management education.

Ben has served as a board trustee of the University of San Carlos (Cebu) and De La Salle-College of St. Benilde.  He has served or is currently serving in various organizations: current board member of SOS Children’s Villages Philippines, past and founding president and current board member of the Philippine Academy of Management (PAoM); past and founding president of the Philippine eLearning Society (PeLS); past president of the Philippine Society for IT Educators (PSITE); past president of the Pambansang Samahan sa Sikolohiyang Pilipino (PSSP, Philippine National Association for Sikolohiyang Pilipino); current member of the Ethics Committee of the Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Association of the Philippines (PHAP); past Chairman of the Corporate Social Responsibility Committee of the Management Association of the Philippines (MAP) and a past trustee of the Shareholders Association of the Philippines (SharePhil).

He serves with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) as a member of the Technical Working Group on Institutional Sustainability Assessment (TWG-ISA), a member of the Task Force on Qualifications Framework in Higher Education, and a member of the Technical Committee on Business Administration. Previously, he served CHED as a member of the Task Force on Outcomes- and Typology -based Quality Assurance, as a member of the Technical Panel on Distance Education and as Chairman of the Technical Panel on Transnational Education.

Internationally, he is serving as a Board Member of the International Humanistic Management Association (IHMA), Executive Committee Member, and Steward of Action Research Plus. He is a member of the United Nations Principles for Management Education (PRME i5) Expert Pedagogy Group and was a member of the United Nations Global Compact Academic Institutions Working Group which developed the Practical Guide to the United Nations Global Compact for Higher Education Institutions. He was formerly the International Rep-at-Large of the Management, Spirituality, and Religion Interest Group of the Academy of Management (AoM).

His recent publications include A kind (of) business: Essays on business leadership and society (with Elfren Cruz) published by Anvil (2022); “Master and slave: The dialectic of human-artificial intelligence engagement” (with Tae Won Kim, et al.) in Humanistic Management Journal (2021);  and Managing for the common good: Catholic Social Teachings and ethical management practice” (with Margaret Que) in Journal of Business, Ethics and Society (2021).

Since 1994 he has contributed columns on ethics and corporate social responsibility, management, leadership, public and corporate governance, and information technology, among others, for BusinessWorld, Manila Times, Manila Standard Today, and Business Mirror.  His column contribution to The Manila Times was awarded Best Business Column by the Catholic Mass Media Awards (CMMA) for 2009.  In 2013, he was awarded by the Financial Executives of the Philippines (FINEX) and Deloitte as Outstanding Educator in a Finance-Related Field: Special Award for Corporate Governance Studies.

He has served in various administrative and formation capacities in various De La Salle schools since 1985. At De La Salle University, he has served as Director of Student Development, Dean of Student Affairs, and Chairman of the Management and Organization Department. At De La Salle-College of St. Benilde, he served as Chairman of the Computer Applications Department, Academic Director of the School of Information Technology, and Director of the Online Learning Center. At De La Salle Professional Schools, he served as Coordinator for Online Learning, Human Resource and Planning Officer, Budget Officer, and Director of the Doctor of Business Administration Program. He served as Head of the Business for Human Development Network (BHDN) under the Center for Business Research and Development of the Ramon V. del Rosario College of Business.  He was elected president of the Association of Faculty and Educators of DLSU, Inc. (AFED) for the Academic Year 2021-22.

He was recognized by De La Salle University as an Outstanding Lasallian Partner in Formation in 2012. In 2021, he was awarded by the University for the Most Cited Scopus Paper in the Area of Business and Social Sciences for 2019 and 2020 for “A call to action research for transformations: The times demand it”, in Action Research Journal.

Ben completed his AB in Behavioral Sciences and BS in Commerce, major in Business Management at De La Salle University, his Master of Statistics at the University of the Philippines-Diliman, and his Doctor of Business Administration degree (with distinction) at De La Salle University.

He is married to the former Ma. Yolanda Pascual and has two sons, Ricardo and Nico.  He likes music and plays guitar, bass, drums and ukulele.  He founded the Renaissance Band comprising faculty members of the university.
