University leaders can learn from military minds
We are happy to share the article by our founder Dr. Vikas Rai Bhatnagar, entitled “?????????? ??????? ??? ????? ???? ???????? ?????” published by ????? ?????? ?????????.
This article is based on autoethnographic insights he gleaned at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Institute of Management, located in Dwarka, New Delhi. A recent practice (Aug 2023) that the Director of the Institute insisted on and persisted in was quite ????????????, ??????????, ??? ?????????, wherein each faculty member was required to take written prior approval from the Director for even attending any online seminar, conference, training, or doing collaborative research! As an academic and a member of various academic bodies such as the Academy of Management and the American Psychological Association, attending online seminars/conferences is as much a part of an academic’s life/being as physical/mental training and practicing cricket by a Virat Kohli!
How distant have we gone from what the Nobel Laureate Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore visualised for India in the poem “Where the Mind is Without Fear.” Below, are few lines reproduced.
“Where the mind is without fear, and the head is held high
Where knowledge is free.
….Where words come out from the depth of truth…
…Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.”
In the article, he share five leadership principles that higher education can adopt and benefit from. While he just lists them here, in the article, Dr. Bhatnagar has briefly described each.
1. A Gentleperson first, officer later.
2. Civility and caring for team members
3. Orders I can myself deliver
4. Professionalism
5. Fair practices
Leadership in the military is all about Character. And Character is all about honouring Commitments!
